Review Of Samsung Galaxy Note

galaxy-note-review-600Without a doubt, the Samsung Galaxy Note is the biggest smartphone you’ve ever seen. It’s still nice and thin (just 0.38 inches), so don’t worry about flashbacks to the Zack Morris phones of yesteryear. Still, why would you want such a big screen in a phone? Samusng has a few ideas, some of them brand new.
With a 5-inch screen, the Galaxy Note blurs the line between phone and tablet. Any function that benefits from extra screen space effectively gets an upgrade on the Note, and there are a lot of them. Still, let’s be clear: you buy this device from AT&T with a contract. It has a built-in data connection (4G LTE, thank you very much) and — oh yeah — it can make voice calls over wireless networks. This is a phone.
The Note’s sheer size has both advantages and disadvantages. With more real estate, the menu screen has room for 30 app icons. That’s amazing, though it’s kind of too many — looking for an app in a 5×6 array definitely makes it a bit harder to lock on to a target. Reading, however, is a better experience than almost any phone, letting you get through lots of text in emails and articles before you need to scroll. If you’re a slow reader, though, you’ll need to increase the time before the screen goes dark from inactivity.

So what sort of tricks can you do with the delightfully retro S Pen? First, there are several drawing apps (surprise, a few are preloaded) that let you get your stylus on, like Touch Physics clone called Crayon Physics, where you draw objects to coax a ball across the screen to hit a star. Cute — and addictive.
But the app Samsung wants you to use the most is S Memo, which you can call up while running any app (even the phone) by holding down he stylus button and double tapping. That way, you can stop and take notes — handwritten notes — anytime, anywhere, no matter what you’re doing. Samsung even throws in handwriting-to-text software to translate your scribble into something intelligible.
In practice, the concept isn’t as good as, um, on paper. As a reporter, I often have to take notes, but writing on the Note feels alien after using an actual notebook. You can simulate an actual pen better with a $50 accessory, but the whole idea just feels better suited for quick Post-It-type messages. Even for those, I’d wager most smartphone users are so good at dashing them off with their thumbs that S Memo would just be redundant. The handwriting recognition is far from flawless as well (shown in the photo below — click to see it larger).
Samsung Bring Galaxy Note`s update and no, it's not Android Ice Cream Sandwich

Samsung rolls out an update to the Galaxy Note, and no, it's not Android Ice Cream Sandwich
Samsung issued an update for the Galaxy Note 5.3" monster of a phone, and some usability tweaks are in store, taking advantage of that massive screen real estate.

The most clever change is a new five-row virtual keyboard, which has the numbers constantly on top, instead of having to enter punctuation mode every time you need to key in the bid in your eBay shopping spree.

There are shrunk keyboard and dialpad modes now as well, which helps immensely when you are struggling to use the phone with one hand, and, lo and behold, it's a struggle with a phone like the Note.

Other enhancements include a larger lock in the lock screen, which you now have to move only slightly to get to the homescreen, instead of having to drag the thing across half the entire giant display before.

There are also arrows that point which way to move it to unlock, in case you are a first-timer.

The laundry list continues with separate settings for brightness and background color for the browser, which should help with battery life, additional date display modes in Calendar, and a dedicated torch widget for your homescreens. This way you can easily use the phone's screen as a torch, with three levels of brightness available by pressing the torch button.
Well, it's not the Android Ice Cream Sandwich update, but it shouldn't be far behind, as Samsung mentioned it will be out this quarter.

Apple to launch iPad 3 early next month: Report
Apple will launch the much-awaited iPad 3 at an event early next month, says an All Things D report. The successor of iPad 2 is reported to sport a more powerful processor and the much-hyped, Retina Display. The event is going to be held in San Francisco.
The iPad 3 release report comes days after an alleged leaked photo of the new iPad hit the Internet. The image, which hinted that the device is already under production, triggered all sorts of speculation regarding the new iPad 3. It's notable that the leaked photo showed very slight difference from the iPad 2, which means the image could be of a rejected prototype or even a fake one.
Another technology site The Verge reports that the new iPad will have double the screen resolution of the iPad 2 and would be one millimetre thicker. The device is likely to be powered by an dual-core A6 chip, and not quad-core ...

Windows mobile Tango to have restrictions on 256MB RAM phones | Windows Tango Phone limitations revealed and minimum specs | windows tango minimum requirements

Windows Phone Tango minimum specs and limitations revealedNew details have been uncovered about the Windows Phone Tango update, by members of the Russian WP7forum, while testing the new OS on a developer device – the HTC Mazaa. While the news brings details about the various improvements that Tango will bring to Windows Phone, it also brings word of the limitations in place for lower-end devices that Tango will enable.

Windows Phone Tango will apparently bring the minimum memory down to measly 256MB RAM, which brings with it the caveat that Windows Phone devices with that much memory will not be able to support all apps, their third-party Live Tiles will not work, and they won’t playback videos with more than a 4Mbps bitrate.

Tango devices with 256MB of RAM also won’t be able to upload images automatically to SkyDrive, and, they don’t support on-phone podcasts management. Windows Phone Tango lowers the bar for the camera on the device as well – the minimum is now 3MP, presumably without 720p HD video recording as mandatory.
Improvements come in the form of SIM contacts migration, enhanced roaming options, automatic app update via Zune, more pre-installed apps, more languages and C++ support (as we’ve heard before), as well as improved MMS capabilities finally featuring audio/video support, and multiple photo attachments.
Windows Phone Tango will bring many cool improvements but also some tight restrictions for low-end phones. Russian site WP7forum tested Tango on a dev phone (the HTC Mazaa) and they've dug up some very interesting details on the matter.
Let's start with the bad news - Tango will enable phones with just 256MB RAM (all current Windows Phone models have 512MB). That's quite low for a smartphone (even Symbian uses more nowadays) and such won't support all apps, plus third-party Live tiles won't update automatically.

The list goes on - Tango phones with 256MB RAM won't be able to play videos with bitrate over 4Mbps (that applies for videos on the phone and streaming video), they won't let you manage podcasts on the phone (you'll need to use Zune on your PC) and photos can't be uploaded automatically to SkyDrive.
This sounds pretty harsh, but we're likely talking about very low-end devices - Microsoft will even let makers use 3MP cameras (the current minimum is 5MP). We're not sure what that means about the 720p video recording that is mandatory for WP phones right now.
Plus, Windows Phone Tango will bring some great usability improvements. It will let you import/export contacts from your SIM card, offer finer grained roaming options and download and update apps automatically through Zune. Tango will also more than double the number of pre-installed apps and support new countries.

MMS support will be greatly improved too - in its current form you can attach a single photo and that's it. With the Tango update, Windows Phone will let you attach multiple photos but also videos and audio files too.

So, Windows Phone Tango will bring some needed improvements to mid- and high-end phones and enable affordable, low-end phones that can pry some users away from the grasp of feature phone

After Twitter, PMO looking at Facebook account

After Twitter, PMO looking at Facebook accountNew Delhi: Within days of its debut on the Twitter, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) is exploring ways to best utilise the social networking site by addressing grievances of common people apart from looking at the possibility of having a Facebook account.

Noting that the Twitter account-- @PMOIndia is already followed by 38,500 people in just two weeks, an official source said a small office will soon be set up in the PMO to effectively handle communications through social media.

Though it will not fall prey to 'professional hecklers' at the social networking site, the team handling the Twitter page will make it more interactive by answering genuine queries.

"We will take up the matter of people in distress on Twitter. The process of social media is very new for us and things will take time," the source said and indicated the PMO could also offer financial help to those in distress through the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

The PMO is also exploring the option of Facebook.

According to the source, the existing PMO account on Facebook is not official and is being run by some fans.

The PMO came on Twitter on January 23 and has since gathered 38,585 followers. "It has been very successful", the source said.
Sources said the PM would have more interaction with the media.

Oracle seeks new trial against SAP over downloads

Oracle seeks new trial against SAP over downloadsSan Francisco: Oracle Corp will head to a retrial against SAP AG over copyright infringement allegations after a US judge slashed a previous monetary award against SAP by over $1 billion.

In a court filing on Monday, Oracle said it would reject a reduced $272 million damages award. A spokesman for SAP could not immediately be reached for comment.

A Northern California jury had determined in 2010 that Oracle should be paid $1.3 billion over accusations SAP subsidiary TomorrowNow wrongfully downloaded millions of Oracle files.

However, US District Judge Phyllis Hamilton last year found that Oracle had proven actual damages of only $272 million. Hamilton said Oracle could accept a $272 million award or opt for a new trial against SAP.

In the filing on Monday, Oracle said it had "no choice" but to seek a new trial, so it could vindicate the jury's verdict.

Samsung under EU scanner over patents

Wednesday, 1 February 2012 0 comments

BRUSSELS: The European Commission opened an investigation into whether Samsung Electronics has distorted competition in the European mobile device market, breaking EU antitrust rules, the EU executive arm said in a statement.

The Commission said that last year Samsung sought injunctions in various EU countries against competitors making mobile devices saying they infringed some of its patent rights, which it has declared essential to implement European mobile telephony standards.

Yet in 1998, when third generation mobile telephony allowing fast mobile internet browsing was being launched in Europe, Samsung promised to licence its patents essential for the implementation of the new mobile telephony standard to others on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms, the Commission said.

"The Commission will investigate, in particular, whether in doing so (seeking injunctions on patent infringements in 2011) Samsung has failed to honour its irrevocable commitment given in 1998 to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to license any standard essential patents relating to European mobile telephony standards on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms," the statement said.

"The Commission will examine whether such behaviour amounts to an abuse of a dominant position prohibited by Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU."

Samsung's main competitors in the mobile device market are Apple of the United States, Finland's Nokia and Canada's Blackberry maker Research in Motion, as well as other makers of phones using Google's Android software.
